About Sedation Dentistry

It’s not uncommon for someone to shun the dentist’s office out of fear. Millions of Americans regularly avoid professional care for this very reason. If you are one of them, Dr. Ragsdale can help. Oral conscious sedation soothes dental phobic and creates a comfortable, stress-free experience.

Safe and effective, sedation dentistry will relax your for a peaceful dental procedure. In addition, you will remember little or nothing about your appointment. Sedation dentistry is also appropriate for patients who would like to eliminate the physical discomfort of a lengthy procedure (from sitting for hours) or for those with a sensitive gag reflex.

Don’t postpone dental work any longer! As a sedation dentist, Dr. Ragsdale will give you peace of mind and leave you looking and feeling better. Imagine the joy of knowing your teeth are healthy! No worry, no anxiety. That’s something to smile about.

How Sedation Dentistry Works

First, schedule a consultation with Dr. Ragsdale. She’ll discuss treatment and sedation options with you during your visit. Several types of medicines are available for dental sedation, and Dr. Ragsdale will determine which are best for you, then present you with options and all the facts. Dr. Ragsdale may consult with your physician, especially if you are taking medications or have underlying conditions that may put you at risk. Your safety is vitally important, and our office will take careful precautions to ensure your sedation session goes smoothly.

When you arrive at the office for a procedure, we will administer sedative medicine in combination with nitrous oxide (laughing gas.) Your body and mind will relax dramatically as the drugs take effect, and you’ll experience diminished perception. Anesthetic shots can make patients nervous, but when the dentist numbs your mouth during a sedation procedure, you won’t feel it or remember it later.

During your procedure, an experienced team member will monitor your vital signs so you’ll stay comfortable and at ease. Unless your fall asleep on your own accord, but unlike general anesthesia, with oral conscious sedation, you will retain the ability to communicate with the dentist.

Expect to stay in a relaxed state for two to six hours with oral conscious sedation. The exact time will depend on your physical condition and the type of treatments you receive. Since you will probably be drowsy after the procedure, a friend or relative should drive you home from the office. This person will be responsible for your supervision once we release you.
