About Gum Disease

Gum disease is an infection that starts below the gum line when sticky plaque hardens into tarter and irritates gum tissue. Combined with bacteria and decaying food particles, infection spreads quickly. The signs of early stage gum disease are mildly swollen and/or bleeding gums, so they may escape your notice. However, these symptoms signal the start of a serious condition which can cause tooth and bone loss.

The Facts about Gum Disease

  • 80% of Americans have some form of gum disease
  • Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in America
  • Gum disease is linked to increased risk for heart attack, stroke, respiratory conditions, Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, low-weight births, and diabetes complications
  • Advanced gum disease causes osteoporosis of the jawbone
  • Gum disease is treatable with professional care and regular maintenance

Laser PerioLase Gum Treatment

Surgery to treat periodontal disease is indicated when diseased gum tissue and bacterial infection must be removed so that new tissue will regenerate and attach to teeth. Traditional gum surgery involves cutting away diseased tissue with a scalpel, then sewing the surgery site closed and waiting for the tissue to heal. This can be a long and painful process.

Dr. Ragsdale relies on PerioLase, a no-cut, no-sew procedure, for minimally invasive and highly conservative gum surgery.

With PerioLase, Dr. Ragsdale will use a tiny laser fiber (about three hairs thick) to eradicate infection in your gum pockets and remove diseased gum tissue that cannot heal. In a procedure called laser decontamination, the laser’s focused beam eliminates bacteria that have formed in periodontal pockets. At the same time, the laser promotes ideal conditions for reattachment of gum tissue to teeth. Furthermore, clinical studies show that laser periodontal therapy improves the odds of recovering from gum disease.
